“The Station” as a Public Space
Reviving “The Station”
site as a cultural, entertainment and leisure
center.*
North of Old Jaffa
in Israel, between the beach and the neighborhoods of Neve Tzedek and Manshia,
stood the first railway station in Jaffa that was built in 1892 with the laying
of the metal railway tracks between Jaffa and Jerusalem. This project was built by a group of European
investors who received the franchise from the Turkish Sultan. The story of “The
Station” reveals an important and fascinating chapter in the history of the
settlement of Jaffa, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem at the end of the 19th
century in the fields of transport, production, and commerce until its closure
on the eve of the War of Independence, in 1948.
The conservation,
development and revival of “The Station” area in the spirit of its golden
period suitable for our times, and to transform it into a beautiful, attractive
compound of Tel Aviv – Jaffa with the participation of private funding.
